What's the Difference Between an Emoji and a Symbol?

GUIDE

In everyday conversation, the words "emoji" and "symbol" are often used interchangeably, but technically they aren't the same thing. Emoji is a specific subset of the Unicode standard, usually made up of colorful, expressive characters that often depict a face, object, or situation (like 😀, 🎉, 🍕). A symbol, on the other hand, is a much broader category: math signs, currency characters, arrows, punctuation-like marks, stars, and much more fall under this definition, but not all of them are "emoji".

The most concrete difference is in appearance. Emoji are drawn differently depending on the platform — the same 😀 character renders with a slightly different visual style on iOS, Android, and Windows, because each company designs its own emoji set. Symbols, on the other hand, are usually single-color, plain text characters and look nearly identical regardless of platform; a ★ star keeps the same simple star shape no matter which device you open it on. This difference also guides which one you should choose: for a serious, formal, or plain look (a report, a work email, a résumé) symbols are more suitable; for a warmer, more playful tone, emoji feel more natural.

The second important difference is readability and accessibility. Emoji are usually read aloud by screen readers with a description (for example, 😀 is announced as "grinning face"), which can make them clearer in a given context. Symbols, on the other hand, are often skipped silently or read as a single character, meaning their meaning has to be inferred from context. Heavy symbol use, especially in text carrying important information, can make accessibility harder.

In practice it's also common to use both together: a few star symbols to draw attention in a heading, and an emoji below to soften the tone of the message. Both types appear in the category lists on this site; you can choose whichever fits your purpose.
